Take a breath and immerse yourself in this song as we explore the idea of relationships and self-worth. Should we be defining ourselves by those we are surrounded with, or should our self-worth come from within? This piece tells a narrative of the highs and lows of counting on others to validate our humanity. Starting in B minor in an unusual 5/4 time signature, our song feels like it’s constantly running, using non-standard chord changes to build tension. We move into a more traditional 3/4 time signature for the chorus, allowing the piece a chance to breathe, giving it a laidback funk feel. Don’t get too complacent as the bridge welcomes a Latin feel using extended harmonies. A reflective, flowing melody contrasts with a driving mantra to create a build-up that resolves the piece through a re-statement of the verse.
