about
The lyrics were inspired by the way the piano part sounded: cyclical and receptive despite the clear build of the piece, so I tried to reflect that with contradicting statements of movement.
• Moving forward, like I’m treading water.
• Making progress, yet I’m standing still.
• Still afloat and yet I’m drowning.
The piano part also had quite a moody atmosphere, which I felt was quite sombre and serious. This inspired the spoken word part of the piece, which once again linked back to the feeling of not getting anwhere, despite attempts to progress.
lyrics
Moving forward, like I'm treading water.
Making progress, yet I'm standing still.
Still afloat, yet I'm drowning.
In the truth ('the truth' echos out)
Moving forward, like I'm treading water.
Making progress, yet I'm standing still.
Still afloat, yet I'm drowning.
All I know are all the things I could have done,
And because I'm at war with myself, I don't know how to run.
In the depths of nothing changing,
All I do is sit aside and wait for you to prove: [Begin Repeat of this section]
These walls hold something new,
As we wander around
In the safety of what we know,
We venture forth,
Day by day,
Finding nothing new.
We're moving forward
But we're not really getting anywhere.
It makes life pointless.
Nothing new.
The darkness closes in,
Engulfing all it touches.
A portal to a black hole,
I'm trapped in the abyss.
Moving forward, like I'm treading water.
(All I know are all the things I could have done)
Making progress, yet I'm standing still.
(All I know are all the things I could have done)
Still afloat, yet I'm drowning.
(All I know are all the things I could have done)
In the truth, the truth, the truth, the truth, the truth...
The abyss is real.
